Mondays with Matt: Always buy the best certified grass seed available

In this edition of “Mondays with Matt”, we discussed the importance of buying good-quality seed.

Matt shared some helpful advice that can be summarized in two key points:

1. When purchasing grass seed, you should always buy the best-certified seed available.
You get better germination, better vitality, and better plants, overall. It may feel like you’re spending a bit more than usual to purchase good quality seed, but after you factor in your fuel, labor, machine time, and parts, putting seed down is still the cheapest thing you can do.

2. It’s smart to use a mix or blend of seeds to promote adaptability to each micro-climate.
Each part of the course is a different environment for seeds to grow in—with different shading, etc. Just choosing to plant a homogenous variety all the way down the fairway can open you up to problems. Therefore, planting a variety of grass will help them selectively establish themselves for the conditions most optimal for the way they were bred.
